Like any other book I've read the it starts of slow and a bit boring, other than "Romeo and Juliet". Although it does start off very dull it is sure to end in a bang (literally). In this first chapter, we get to see the most about Lennie and George and about their lives. We see the feel for one another and their personality. We read about the troubles they've gone through and the troubles their just about to face. The first chapter is an introduction to Lennie and George's situation, so don't expect too much.
We first see George and Lennie traveling off to the ranch and discussing the lives they've lived and the lives they just about to start. They are seen getting off a bus and heading to the ranch to their new lives in California during The Great Depression. We see Lennie, as strange as he is, petting dead rats that he had killed while touching. George guides Lennie and tells him to get rid of the rat but Lennie is unwilling to. We get to see them both as idealists as George describes their fantasy of owning their own farm with rabbits. This is the two's ultimate goal in the story. George is also seen even more as an idealist as he says,"I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn't have you on my trail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl"(Steinbeck Page 7). George is seen as an idealist but you will eventually see how he changes. Although Lennie seems to remain the same for the most part, even from the start as we hear a story about Lennie that had gotten the two into much trouble. Lennie and George had once encountered a woman in a red dress. Lennie who loves to touch soft things had begun rubbing the dress and would not let go. The women then believe he had assaulted her and this had lead to the situation their in now. This was an example of Lennie's innocence and throughout the novel we see how he never means to cause harm to others. He is an innocent soul who was once often guided by her Aunt Clara but now we see George taking over.
Chapter 1 ends off with George and Lennie around the fire and sleeping in the night. It was was an interesting beginning however, the first few pages had appealed boring to me. A few pages in and I had read about George and Lennie, I had started to taken a large interest in the novel. The story has just begun and it is soon to get real interesting so stay tuned and keep reading fellow bloggers.
